Using the FE Reference Handbook for Ethics and Professional Practice
The Ethics section of the handbook is short enough to read end to end in fifteen minutes, and doing that once is worth more than any practice set. Read it, then read the NCEES Model Rules of Professional Conduct directly. When a question feels like a judgement call, it usually is not: the rule that decides it is written down somewhere in those few pages.
Four Mistakes That Cost Points
- Choosing the answer that protects the employer. Loyalty to an employer is real but subordinate. When an option protects the public and another protects the company, the public option is correct even when it reads as disloyal or career-limiting.
- Going public before going internal. Whistleblowing is a last resort, not a first move. The correct sequence is almost always: raise it internally and in writing, escalate, and only then notify an authority. An option that skips straight to the press is a distractor.
- Accepting work slightly outside your competence. An engineer may only perform work in areas of competence. Accepting a thermal-systems job because you once took the class is a violation, even with the intention of learning it. The correct answer brings in a qualified engineer.
- Treating a small gift as harmless. The Model Rules bar accepting valuable consideration from a party other than the client in connection with the work. The exam does not draw a line at a dollar amount, so decline.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many ethics questions are on the FE Mechanical exam?
NCEES specifies 4-6 questions from Ethics and Professional Practice out of 110, about 4-5 percent. Because they need no calculation, they are the fastest points available and worth securing early in your preparation.
Are the FE Mechanical ethics questions different from FE Civil?
The rules are identical, since both use the NCEES Model Rules. The scenarios differ in setting: mechanical candidates see more product design, manufacturing and vendor situations, civil candidates see more public-works and sealing-of-drawings situations. The reasoning is the same.
Do I need to know my state's specific licensure laws?
