The FE Environmental exam is the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering exam for candidates whose work sits where engineering meets the natural environment: water supply and treatment, wastewater, air emissions, contaminated soil and groundwater, and waste management. It is the first of the two exams on the road to a PE license.
The format matches every other FE discipline. You answer 110 questions on a computer at a Pearson VUE test center, with 5 hours and 20 minutes of exam time inside an appointment of roughly 6 hours. The extra time covers a tutorial and an optional 25-minute break, so pace yourself against the exam clock, not the appointment length.
A searchable electronic copy of the NCEES FE Reference Handbook stays on screen throughout, so nothing has to be memorized but everything has to be found fast. Results are reported as Pass or Fail only, and NCEES does not publish a fixed passing percentage.

5-8 questions. Analytic geometry, calculus, differential equations and numerical methods.
4-6 questions. Descriptive statistics, distributions, confidence intervals and regression — the tools behind sampling and water-quality data.
5-8 questions. Codes of ethics, licensure and liability, and the duty to protect public health and the environment.
5-8 questions. Time value of money, present and annual worth, benefit-cost analysis and life-cycle costing.
7-11 questions. The cross-cutting basics: mass and energy balances, reaction kinetics, reactor behavior and unit conversions.
7-11 questions. Stoichiometry, acid-base and solubility equilibria, alkalinity and buffering, plus the organic chemistry behind contaminants.
4-6 questions. Dose-response relationships, exposure pathways, toxicology, and risk assessment for chemical and biological hazards.
12-18 questions. One of the two heaviest areas: fluid properties, pressure and buoyancy, pipe networks and head loss, pumps, open-channel flow.
3-5 questions. Energy balances, phase behavior, psychrometrics and combustion, mostly supporting air-quality and energy questions.
9-14 questions. Precipitation and runoff, hydrographs, watershed and reservoir routing, detention sizing and surface-water quality.
8-12 questions. Aquifer properties, Darcy's law and well hydraulics, subsurface contaminant transport and site remediation.
12-18 questions. The other heavyweight: coagulation, sedimentation, filtration and disinfection, plus BOD loading, activated sludge and biosolids.
8-12 questions. Emission estimation, atmospheric dispersion, indoor air quality, and control devices such as baghouses and scrubbers.
7-11 questions. Waste characterization and generation rates, collection and recycling, landfill and leachate/gas management.
4-6 questions. Energy sources and conversion efficiency, emissions from power generation, and sustainability metrics.

Water and Wastewater and Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics can each carry up to 18 questions; Thermodynamics carries as few as three. Rehearse full-length timed sets too — 110 questions in 5 hours 20 minutes leaves under three minutes per question.
